About Career Readiness Program
Program Overview
The Career Readiness Program encourages students to explore career interests while applying their leadership skills and knowledge to real world situations. Students in grades 8-12 complete requirements that enhance the curriculum in the classroom and give them the opportunity to explore careers for post-secondary life. LPS students will connect with the local community and showcase their leadership skills through mentoring, job shadowing, internships, and practicums.
Credit for Real World Learning
Beginning with the 2021-2022 school year, students will receive credit toward graduation by completing yearly requirements that will help inform and influence choices on colleges and careers. Students will have the opportunity to showcase their leadership abilities and improve their employability skills by participating in mock interviews, job shadowing, internships, and practicums with businesses in the community.
Why Career Readiness?
Everything we do at Leadership Prep ties back to our mission “to inspire students to learn, grow, and lead for a lifetime.” We know that all learning doesn’t happen at school, and we want real-world learning to be part of the leadership experience. By challenging students to apply their knowledge and stretch their learning capacity, the future potential and employability of each student can be greatly expanded. The five-year requirements of this program greatly exceed the expectations of area schools allowing Leadership Prep School graduates to have professional opportunities that others may not have until after high school.
Personalized Career Exploration
Students can customize their experiences according to their personal and career interests. The flexibility of the program allows students to prepare for any post-secondary opportunity including colleges, universities, trade and technical schools, military service, apprenticeships, or workforce training. The hands-on learning with professionals can help students discover new areas of interest or a dream job.
Preparing Future Leaders in the Workforce
Leadership Prep is working with a wide range of Community Partners who will participate in mock interviews and job shadowing as well as host students for internships. Students will be able to apply their knowledge to real-world situations with these businesses and professionals.

Welcome to our 2024-2025 school year! We are very excited about the amazing year the students and staff are going to have and look forward to seeing the young leaders that they become!
Last school year, we implemented our first full year of the Career Readiness program for all of our 8th-11th grade students.
Our 10th graders completed their Defense of Learning presentations where they defended their learning by citing evidence of their growth in their academics and how that growth will help them be successful in their next 2 years at LPS.
All of the 9th and 10th grade students participated in formal Mock Interviews. We brought in 10 professionals from outside LPS to conduct the interviews (HR Director with the CIty of Frisco, Manager of Walgreens, HR Recruiter, Event Coordinators from Main Event, and Area Directors from Alpha Best). The feedback was incredible. Our students did an outstanding job and were prepared and professional.
All students 8-11th were required to complete job shadow/internship hours to help them explore potential career choices. A total of 2,254 hours were completed at 244 different businesses in our community. We also had 22 students who completed online certifications to help them with their post-secondary choices.
Our current senior class, Class of 2025, will be the first class to present their Senior Presentation at the end of the school year. They will defend their learning and show how their skills and knowledge learned will help them with their choices after graduation.
We are looking forward to a wonderful and successful school year, where LPS students will thrive in their academics, personal growth, and their leadership skills.

Where can I find shadowing hours?
Students may find more success in reaching out to personal contacts (former employers, family, friends, community members) with a statement of interest when looking for an opportunity. We encourage students to seek job shadowing opportunities in fields that they may be interested in pursuing.
The majority of our students utilize their family/friend contacts first. The students who knew which career field they wanted to pursue, reached out directly to those businesses.

Email to all Parents for the 2024-2025 School Year
Hello parents and students! I am reaching out to ensure that you have all the information you need for your Career Readiness program this year. I am so excited to see the different businesses that our students will get to experience and explore! For those of you who are new to LPS, Career Readiness is a program that all of our students, 8th grade through 12th grade, participate in to help prepare them for their post-secondary career. Each grade level has requirements to complete throughout the year. All but 1 will be completed during the school year in class. We want our students to be exposed to different career options, prepare for real-life interviews, understand workplace professionalism, and explore careers that interest them. They will work on these skills during their Leadership class. The one component that will be completed outside of school is Job Shadowing. Each grade level has required shadow hours that they must complete by May 1, 2025. We want students to use their communication skills and reach out to potential businesses that they might be interested in after graduation. There are a few parameters when it comes to shadow/internship hours and are subject to approval from the Career Readiness Coordinator.*Students cannot shadow someone who works from home.*Students (10th grade +) who choose to get an online certificate must get the actual certificate and not just take the online course.*Students cannot shadow the same person as previous years.*Students cannot get credit for shadow/internship without prior approval.*Students cannot get credit for hours that they completed over the summer unless they were approved prior to the end of the school year.*Students (10th grade +) can participate in internships throughout the school year or during the summer. The approval form for job shadowing is outside of room 205. The approval form must be hand signed by the student and a parent. Once it is turned in, I typically approve it very quickly.
Students need to take a Shadow Log with them when they do their shadowing. The person/s that they shadow signs off on how many hours they were there. Once that is turned in with original signatures from the shadow opportunity, the student will get credit. The student will then complete a reflection and upload it into their Leadership Portfolio. The Quick Links page below has all of the links to the forms needed.I have visited every classroom in the past few weeks and have reviewed this with all the students. They are aware of what they get to work on and participate in this year. Below are links to FAQ's, the quick links page and grade level requirements. Please feel free to reach out for any additional questions or concerns that you have. We are looking forward to a great year!
